Why Fikayo Tomori is not in England World Cup squad as Southgate decision explained

Fikayo Tomori is one of the biggest omissions from Gareth Southgate's England squad, which was announced on Thursday afternoon ahead of the Qatar World Cup..

The defender was left out of the squad alongside other big names such as Tammy Abraham, Marc Guehi, James Ward-Prowse and Ivan Toney. However, it is Tomori's omission which has confused many fans as the Serie A winning defender misses out on selection, with Connor Coady the surprise inclusion in his place.

Tomori has been around the squad for a number of years, making his debut in 2019 and then being awarded two subsequent caps but has never been able to force his way into Southgate's plans on a consistent basis.

The England boss will be considering the fact that Tomori has not been at his best so far this campaign, following a difficult run in the Champions League where he was sent off against former club Chelsea at San Siro. in addition to this, his league form has also dipped and he was sent home before England's final Nations League fixture against Germany in September.

Also missing out is fellow Chelsea academy graduate Tammy Abraham, who has suffered a similar dip in form following his exploits last season at Roma. If the tournament had been in summer, there would have been little debate around whether or not he would be in the squad, but following a poor run he misses out in favour of Callum Wilson.
