Why fewer than half of Brits feel ‘proud to be British’

  • Research by think tank Demos reveals that the proportion of people proud to be British has fallen sharply from 74 per cent in 2011 to 47 per cent.
  • Pride in local communities has risen from 29 per cent to 40 per cent, reflecting a shift towards local identity over national pride.
  • Pride in major British institutions has plummeted, with Parliament and the BBC both falling to minus 11 per cent, while pride in the monarchy dropped to 25 per cent.
  • Demos chief executive Polly Curtis stated that the decline stems from an eroded confidence in national institutions and a loss of shared ownership over the country's future.
  • Prime Minister Andy Burnham has pledged to implement a place-first strategy to ensure neglected areas outside Westminster receive fairness.
