Why do belly buttons collect lint? Austrian chemist spent 3 years collecting his own to discover how ‘barbed’ hairs trap clothing fibres, but another scientist won an Ig Nobel for studying it

Why do belly buttons collect so much lint. Belly-button lint is one of those small mysteries most people notice but bearly know how it emerges there. One chemist decided to study it. For about three years, Austrian chemist Georg Steinhauser collected the lint from his own navel and ended up with 503 samples for a scientific study to know where does all that fluff come from, and why does it end up in the belly button? In his study published in 2009, Steinhauser concluded that abdominal hair plays an important role. As per his study, the structure and direction of the hairs can catch loose fibres from clothing and help move them towards the navel. He described the hair as having a scaly structure that can work somewhat like tiny hooks, helping fibres become trapped.
