Why Chelsea will be praying for this Liam Rosenior cost-saving move

Chelsea parted ways with Liam Rosenior last month after a disastrous run of results, and it may well be a costly decision for the Blues.

Rosenior only lasted four months as Chelsea manager. A five-game run of defeats in the league, twinned with a huge defeat against PSG in the Champions League ultimately sealed his fate.

Sacking the young manager was yet another sign of the instability at Chelsea over the course of the season, and it was a move that will have cost the Blues a pretty penny, too.

Chelsea could save millions if Liam Rosenior takes another job

It was initially reported by BBC Sport that Chelsea may have to pay £24m in compensation to Rosenior due to the nature of his lengthy contract.

However, a subsequent report claimed Rosenior can expect significantly lower than that lofty sum.

Now, there's a new twist in the tale, as Rosenior has emerged as a contender for the vacant Watford job.

According to talkSPORT, Rosenior is an outside bet for the role with the Championship club, and if appointed, it would reduce his compensation from Chelsea even further.

It's thought Chelsea had agreed to pay Rosenior £4m to cover one year of his contract with them.

But, if he takes another job in the meantime, that would mean he forfeits the payment from his former employers.

Whether he deems that a worthwhile trade-off in order to get back to work as soon as possible remains to be seen.

Given Chelsea's record-breaking losses over the last financial year, the idea of saving £4m would certainly be a boost.

Calum McFarlane is currently in charge on an interim basis until the end of the season. Cesc Fabregas is thought to have rejected Chelsea already, as they search for another permanent manager.

Chelsea's next match is a Premier League clash against Liverpool on Saturday, May 9.
