Why BT Sport is rebranding to TNT Sports in major Premier League and Champions League decision

BT Sport will be presented as TNT Sports from next season after being taken over by Warner Bros Discovery in September.

Marc Allera, the Chief Executive Officer of BT's Consumer Division, announced in February that Premier League viewers will be able to watch games on TNT Sports from July.

BT has televised Premier League matches since 2013, broadcasting 52 live games for the current 2022/23 season with their TV rights deal running until 2025. In a statement posted to Twitter, Allera wrote: "We've announced that we're making another important move in our plans with @wbd to bring together the best of BT Sport and Eurosport under one roof.

"TNT Sports is the new name that will replace BT Sport, from July 2023. This marks the next logical step for BT Sport as well as the broader transformation of BT's Consumer business.

"Once launched, it'll become a hugely exciting new premium sports offering for customers. And, as chair of our JV with @wbd, I'm pleased with the progress we're making.

"I'm also really proud of our teams, who have been working at pace to create a more efficient platform that'll see this new sports brand in the UK and Ireland brought to life for the first time before the start of the 2023/24 football season."

According to The Telegraph, BT Sport subscribers who watch via its streaming app will have to do so on the Discovery+ app. The report states that TV viewers, however, will not have to do anything — the name of the channel will just change name.

Many fans may be scratching their heads as to why BT Sport will be renamed to TNT Sports. As quoted by The Telegraph, the President and Managing Director at Warner Bros Discovery Sports Europe, Andrew Georgiou, said: "The TNT Sports name is already synonymous with premium live sport in a number of countries around the world and a further sign of the global scale and expertise that Warner Bros Discovery brings to its partnership with BT."
