Why Arsenal haven't confirmed Matt Turner transfer amid New England Revolution announcement

Arsenal are set to announce the signing of Matt Turner from the New England Revolution this summer football.london understands.

The American international stopper was linked heavily with a move to North London throughout January, and football.london was able to reveal that an agreement had been struck between the two clubs over a move in the summer.

That news was confirmed on Friday by the Revs who revealed in a statement that the 27-year-old would be making the move across the Atlantic during the summer transfer window.

Arsenal though are still yet to make any announcement at their end despite the news and are not expected to for a while yet.

Instead football.london understands that the Gunners will look to confirm the deal in June when Turner flies over to complete a medical ahead of the move.

While agreements over personal terms and a fee between clubs have been reached, Arsenal are unwilling to officially confirm the transfer until that process is complete.

Should the medical go ahead successfully then Turner will join up with Mikel Arteta's side ahead of their pre-season preparations for next campaign.

It is thought that the Revs made the decision to announce the move earlier due to growing speculation around one of their most important players.

The MLS side are understood to have confirmed the move with Arsenal's blessing and there is not thought to have been any issues between the two clubs despite the difference in approach.

Turner has made 16 appearances for the USMNT and arrives in the Premier League after being named New England Revolution's MVP last season.

The 27-year-old is expected to play backup to Gunners' number one Aaron Ramsdale, and while this risks his chances of playing for the United States at the World Cup at the end of this year, football.london understands that Turner felt the chance to fulfil his lifelong ambition of playing in the Premier League was too good to turn down.

The news is likely to spell the end of Bernd Leno's career at the Emirates, with the German now likely to end his four year stay in North London this summer as he seeks to get himself a place in Germany's World Cup squad for Qatar.
