Why are Arsenal wearing an all-white kit in Liverpool FA Cup clash?

Arsenal host Liverpool on Sunday in the undoubted headline tie of FA Cup third-round weekend.

It is the second meeting between the Premier League title rivals in the space of just two weeks, following a frantic and thrilling 1-1 draw played out at Anfield on December 23.

On that occasion, Gabriel Magalhaes' early opener for the visitors was cancelled out by Mohamed Salah's equaliser, with Trent Alexander-Arnold later hitting the woodwork as Arsenal remained top of the table at Christmas.

However, things have changed markedly since then, with successive dispiriting defeats by London rivals West Ham and Fulham leaving Arsenal down in fourth and suddenly five points adrift of New Year leaders Liverpool, who have beaten both Burnley and Newcastle of late and still lost just once in the top-flight all season.

Due to the upcoming winter break, neither side plays in the league again until the weekend of January 20/21, with Liverpool contesting the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie against Fulham on Merseyside on Wednesday night.

But before then it's the FA Cup that takes centre stage, with one of the competition's most successful sides destined for an immediate exit.

Arsenal are record 14-time winners of the world's oldest club competition, with their last triumph coming back in 2020. Liverpool have lifted the trophy on eight occasions, including in 2022.

Why are Arsenal wearing an all-white kit against Liverpool?

Arsenal are not wearing their usual red and white home strips against Liverpool on Sunday, instead donning an all-white kit for a special cause.

The 'No More Red' kit is being worn as part of Arsenal's ongoing campaign against knife crime and youth violence, with the traditional red drained out.

The Gunners' men's side also wore the kit in previous FA Cup ties away against Nottingham Forest and Oxford last season, but Sunday marks the first time they have done so in a home match at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal's women's side will also wear it for the first time when they meet Watford in an FA Cup fourth round game against Watford at Meadow Park on Sunday.

“No More Red provides a unique opportunity to highlight almost four decades of our local community work that has helped to keep thousands of young people safe," said Freddie Hudson, head of Arsenal in the Community.

“Young people face multiple challenges as they grow up in today’s world and we don’t have all the answers, but we are confident that by acting together and shining a light on the support network available across our community, we can make a significant contribution to the lives of our participants.”
