The gene that decides orange is on the X chromosome
The orange coat colour in cats is controlled by a gene called O (for orange), located on the X chromosome. This gene determines whether a cat produces orange-red pigment (phaeomelanin) or black-brown pigment (eumelanin). Because it sits on the X chromosome and not on an autosome, it behaves very differently depending on whether a cat is male or female.
