We are just one month away from the next United States presidential election and both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are scrambling to claim as many votes from the public as possible to cinch the top spot. On Monday — in a collab that I never saw coming — Harris did just that, appearing on Alex Cooper‘s cult podcast Call Her Daddy to discuss reproductive rights, women’s health care, domestic violence, student debt and housing.
On the surface, it’s a pretty bold move for Harris — especially when Call Her Daddy is a podcast known for its frank discussions about sex and the popularisation of the Gluck Gluck 3000. But it’s also a bit of a surprise move for Cooper, who certainly isn’t a political reporter.
She’s a podcaster with a knack for connecting with women around the world and chatting to sought-after celebrities in long-form interviews. Since 2018, Call Her Daddy has been a cultural moment and despite the changes the podcast itself has gone through, it’s managed to become the most listened-to podcast by women worldwide.
In the intro to the interview, Cooper admitted she was nervous about bringing Harris onto the podcast.
“As you guys know, I do not usually discuss politics or have politicians on this show, because I want Call Her Daddy to be a place that everyone feels comfortable tuning in every single week,” Cooper began.
“I talk about topics like mental health, relationships, sex, sexuality, and trauma, overall, my focus is women and the day-to-day issues that we face.
“I had been going back and forth with this decision for a while to get involved or to not get involved, but at the end of the day, I couldn’t see a world in which one of the main conversations in this election is women and I’m not a part of it.”
While Cooper noted that she probably wasn’t the best person to be discussing issues like fracking or border control, she did feel qualified to discuss issues pertaining to women’s rights and reproductive rights.
“I want to be so clear since this isn’t a one-sided conversation, that we reached out to former President Donald Trump to come on the show,” she continued.
“If he also wants to have a meaningful, in-depth conversation about women’s rights in this country, then he is welcome on Call Her Daddy anytime.”
Now that’s an interview I’d like to see.
During the chat, the Democratic nominee slammed Trump for claiming to be a “protector of women”.
She also absolutely came for Trump for claims he made about Democrats “executing” babies during last month’s presidential debate.
“That is not happening anywhere in the United States. It is not happening and it’s a lie,” she said, adding that it was “insulting” to insinuate that women would have an abortion in their ninth month of pregnancy.
Along with reproductive rights, Harris also touched on her plans to make housing more affordable.
“Part of my plan is to give 100 million more people who basically are middle-class working people, tax cuts, including for young parents, a $6,000 tax cut for the first year of their child’s life, which helps them buy a crib or a car seat or clothing and just get through that first year,” she explained.

Why is Kamala Harris’ interview on Call Her Daddy such a big deal?
Throughout the campaign, Harris has been criticised for the lack of media interviews. But as the election creeps closer, she kicked off a series of media appearances with the cult-fave podcast. She is also set to appear on The View, Howard Stern‘s radio show The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
While some X (formerly Twitter) users condemned Harris for going on a podcast which frequently hosts frank discussions about sex and female sexuality, others claimed that it’s just not the right platform for political discussions.
The thing is, Call Her Daddy is fkn huge. It’s become a behemoth cultural movement that has shifted and changed with the times from being a podcast about empowering women sexually to all-encompassing conversations about the female experience.
Harris’ decision to be interviewed by Cooper on Call Her Daddy is incredibly clever because it gives her a direct line to the ears of millions of women in America who will be directly impacted by the laws put in effect by the people in power — especially laws which exercise control over the women’s reproductive rights.
So often, when things with a large female audience are discussed in popular media, they’re dismissed or belittled. This time around, it’s nice to see that Harris and her team took note of the power of a predominantly female audience.
With the US presidential election due to take place on November 5, 2024, we’re getting to the prickly end, folks. Can’t wait to see how this whole thing ends.
