What happens when a divine promise outlives the person who asks for it? The story of Mahishasura's birth begins with two brothers, a powerful act of devotion and a boon from Agni Dev. Rambha and Karambha wanted extraordinary sons, but their pursuit of that wish took an unexpected turn. After losing his brother, Rambha received a promise that would shape his future. His love for a buffalo named Shyamala then set the stage for the birth of Mahishasura, the asura whose story eventually became part of the legend of Maa Durga.
