The World Health Organization does not recommend weight-loss drugs, bariatric surgery or weight-loss devices for children younger than 10, according to its first global guidelines on managing obesity in children and adolescents, released on October 7.
For adolescents ages 10 to 19, medicines may be considered only after supervised lifestyle programs have not worked, and surgery is reserved for a narrow group with severe obesity. The guidance arrives as more families ask pediatricians about GLP-1 drugs, the class that includes Wegovy.
