Whoopi Goldberg could be coming to Scotland to film new Amazon show Anansi Boys

Sister Act and Ghost star Whoopi Goldberg could be set to come to Edinburgh for a new TV series.

New Amazon Prime show Anansi Boys has already started filming at George Street in the city's Le Monde Hotel and further scenes will be filmed at First Stage Studios in Leith docks.

Grammy and Oscar winning Whoopi has always been a huge fan of the original 2005 Neil Gaiman novel and it's now thought she will have a starring role in the production which will film until May in Scotland.

Although Gaiman hasn't actually named Whoopi as a castmember yet but has dropped major hints.

The star has moderated the New York Comic Con Good Omens Prime Panel with the writer in the past and he recently told fans on Twitter: "I'll give you one clue: one of our cast members was on a public event with me at some point in the last five years.

"The first thing she said when we met backstage was that her favourite book was the audio book of Anansi Boys, read by Lenny Henry.

"And when I told her that there was a part in the book I'd originally written with her in mind, she was overjoyed. So when it became a reality, she was the first person I asked, and the first to agree."

The story follows a trickster who is one of the most important characters of West African, African American and Caribbean folklore.

Neil and and comedian and actor Lenny Henry both wrote the film which tells the story of Mr Nancy, the father of separated at birth twins Charlie and Spider.

After his death, it’s revealed that Mr Nancy was actually an incarnation of the West African trickster god Anansi.

Those who are avid fans reckons she'd be perfect for the role of Bird Woman - God of all the birds and a shape-shifter who turns from old woman into a powerful bird.

When follower Nadir Muhammad (@Ridan87) replied to Gaiman's tweet with: "For the longest time I thought Whoopi should play Bird woman in Anansi Boys...’ he replied: "Me too."

Whoopi appeared at the Edinburgh TV festival last year where she was selected as the International Icon.

She's also no stranger to Scotland, having visited the old Third Eye Centre in Glasgow in the past - now known as the CCA in Sauchiehall Street.

She and her colleague David Schein appeared for Mayfest 1984 where she performed solo for a door price of £2.
