Who will win Dortmund vs Rangers? Staff predictions plus Michael Owen’s take on Europa League showdown

It's another big night in Europe for Scottish football.

It's a huge task for Rangers in the Europa League as they face an elite European side in Borussia Dortmund.

One big positive for the visitors is that superstar striker Erling Haaland will miss the first leg in Germany, with Gio van Bronckhorst short on defensive options.

Steven Gerrard enjoyed pushes deep into the latter stages of this competition and fans will hope to see the same again.

Van Bronckhorst will look to pull off a shock result in Germany and push through the playoff with a result in the second leg at Ibrox.

It's a game that has got everyone talking, including former England, Real Madrid and Liverpool striker Michael Owen.

Here's how the top team at Record Sport along with the pundit predict the action will unfold.

Andy Newport

Der BVB are one of the biggest clubs in Europe but the fact superstar striker Erling Haaland is out is a major boost to Gers, who will believe they can test a backline that has leaked 14 goals in its last seven games. A draw would put the Scottish champions in a brilliant position for the Ibrox return next week.

Erling Haaland may be missing but I would still expect Dortmund to have too much for Rangers at home. I can see the Light Blues keeping it tight and still being in with a chance for the Ibrox return.

Borussia Dortmund are of a high level and are likely to win. Rangers just need to try and give themselves a chance at Ibrox in the return.

Dortmund 2 Rangers 0

Gordon Parks

A step-up in class too far for Gers, the Germans operate at a superior level week in and week out and this could be a painful reality check for the Scottish champions.

Borussia Dortmund 3 Rangers 0

Erling Haaland or not this is a formidable BVB side with Marco Reus in top form. Jude Bellingham, Julian Brandt, Axel Witsel and the dangerous Raphael Guerreiro wide on the left mean there’s threat all over the park for Rangers to cope with. The big hope for Gio van Bronckhorst is that Dortmund’s shaky defence continue to leak goals. Alfredo Morelos will he licking his lips at the chance to shine on the Euro stage again and Gers can do enough to keep themselves in the tie for the return.

Dortmund 2 Rangers 1

Mark Pirie

They may be missing their star man, but Dortmund will be no pushovers. Marco Rose will be demanding his players put down a marker, and couple that with Rangers facing a defensive injury crisis it could be a long night for Gio van Bronckhorst. But if the Scottish champions can keep the score down it will set up an interesting second leg at Ibrox.

Dortmund 2 Rangers 0

Gabriel McKay

Dortmund are leaky at the back so don't bet against Rangers bagging a goal at the Westfalenstadion. The step up in quality is huge against the second best side in the Bundesliga though, even with no Erling Haaland to worry about. A Dortmund win, but one that keeps the dream alive at Ibrox.

Dortmund 3 Rangers 1

Michael Owen

What a tie for Rangers, this is what European football is all about. They couldn’t have got a much harder draw though; I’m sure van Bronckhorst will be aiming to get back to Glasgow still in this tie.

It’s a big ask though as I think Dortmund will get the win; historically, they are so strong at home. 2-0 Dortmund, which wouldn’t be a disaster for Rangers.

Dortmund 2 Rangers 0
