Who was Takeoff? Migos perform for first time without rapper at BET awards

In their first onstage reunion since last year, Quavo and Offset came together to pay tribute to their late Migos groupmate, Takeoff, at Sunday night’s BET awards.

In a surprise appearance, the pair wowed an emotional crowd with a performance of Migos’ 2016 smash hit Bad and Boujee.

The Atlanta rappers appeared together on stage in front of an animated graphic of a rocket, which took off and transformed into a photo of Takeoff, who was shot and killed aged 28 in November 2022.

Last week, the duo were pictured together for the first time in months at a celebration for Takeoff with friends and family on what would have been the rapper’s 29th birthday.

Shortly before his death, Quavo and Takeoff had shared their new LP Only Built for Infinity Links. Earlier this year, Quavo shared a tribute song to his late nephew called Without You, debuting the track at the Grammys.

Who was Takeoff?

Takeoff, whose real name is Kirsnick Khari Ball, was the youngest member of Grammy-nominated hip hop trio Migos.

He was partly raised by his fellow group members Quavo, his uncle, and his close childhood friend, whom he called a cousin, Offset, in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

The group began rapping in 2008, initially performing under the stage name Polo Club, and released their first full-length project, a mixtape called Juug Season, in 2011.

Their breakout single Versace, released in 2013, propelled them to fame after it was remixed by Drake.

The group have had four top 10 hits on the Billboard Top 100.

How did Takeoff die?

On November 1, 2022, 28-year-old Takeoff was shot outside a Houston bowling alley at 2.30am. The rapper was pronounced dead at the scene, having suffered a gunshot wound to the neck or head.

He was one of three people police said were shot in the incident when an argument broke out while around 40 people left a private party.

The police have said that the rapper was not involved and was “an innocent bystander”.

Takeoff’s label, Quality Control Music, said: “It is with broken hearts and deep sadness that we mourn the loss of our beloved brother Kirsnick Khari Ball, known to the world as Takeoff. Senseless violence and a stray bullet has taken another life from this world and we are devastated. Please respect his family and friends as we all continue to process this monumental loss.”

After the incident, Migos member Offset revealed a tattoo in remembrance of his bandmate and Quavo shared a new tribute song called Greatness.

In January of this year, the man charged with the murder of the Migos rapper was released from jail after his $1 million bond was posted.

Who are the other Migos?

Quavo, 32, whose real name is Quavious Keyate Marshall, and Offset (Kiari Kendrell Cephus), 31, are the other two members of Migos.

Although the pair confirmed this year that they are not biologically related, they said they have considered each other cousins since childhood, growing up together in Georgia (Quavo and Takeoff are directly related).

In 2015, the trio briefly had to be reduced to a duo when Offset was sent to jail following a police raid on the group’s tour bus after a show at Georgia State University.

He was remanded in custody and finally released in December 2015 after eight months, reuniting the three Migos.

Offset has been in a relationship with rapper Cardi B since early 2017, and the pair have two children together. The couple confirmed they secretly married in September 2017.
