Who Was Mike Ditka? 'Iron Mike' Dies at 86 After Battling Multiple Heart Attacks and a Stroke

Mike Ditka, the Hall of Fame tight end who coached the Chicago Bears to their only Super Bowl title, has died aged 86, his family announced on Friday, 9 October. Known to fans as 'Iron Mike' and 'Da Coach', he became the first tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988.

Ditka's agent and business partner, Steve Mandell, told USA TODAY Sports that he died of natural causes, although an official medical cause was not immediately available to the outlet. Born on 18 October 1939, Ditka died nine days before his 87th birthday.
