The festive John Lewis advert will be released on November 10 and is titled The Beginner as it aims to raise awareness of children in care.
The release of the advert follows the launch of the Building Happier Futures programme, which is a long-term commitment to help young people with experience of the care system in a number of ways, including to find meaningful careers.
The Beginner follows a middle-aged man as he struggles comedically to master the skill of skateboarding ahead of the arrival of his new foster child, Ellie.
The significance of skateboarding soon becomes clear, as we understand the father figure's resolve to find common ground and a way to connect with Ellie as she is welcomed into their family home holding her own skateboard.
In the background of the 90-second clip, a cover of All The Small Things by Blink 182 is playing - but who sings the cover song?
Who sings All The Small Things in the John Lewis advert?
The Beginner is set to a soundtrack of All the Small Things, a cover of the Blink 182 track, performed by Mike Geier.
The singer garnered international fame through his most critically acclaimed act: a Pagliacci-type clown alter ego named Puddles Pity Party.
As the alter ego, Geier has toured North America, Europe, and Austraila; and has released content under the moniker since 2013.
The 58-year-old is a singer and pianist who has previously released covers of Lorde's Royals and Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah.
Geier also took part in the 2017 series of America's Got Talent as Puddles and reached the quarterfinals where he performed his cover of the Lorde hit.
Sadly, he received an 'X' from Simon Cowell, eliminating him from the competition.
Which other musicians have released a cover song for John Lewis?
Over the years, many famous or lesser-known artists have released musical covers of popular songs for the annual John Lewis Christmas advert.
In 2010, pop star Ellie Goulding released a cover of Elton John's hit Your Song and eight years later, the man himself starred in the retailer’s Christmas advert called The Boy And The Piano, which offered up a festive-themed retrospective of the musician’s career.
In 2013, songstress Lily Allen released a cover of Keane's Somewhere Only We Know, which went straight to number one in the music charts following its release.
However, its success was overshadowed by comments Allen subsequently made in an interview with Vulture.
She claimed she had been “bullied” into recording the song by her record label, and that she had not received any monetary gain from the single.
In 2015, Norweigan singer Aurora was chosen to cover Oasis’s Half The World Away, a cult 1994 B-side much loved by fans of the band and the theme tune to the hit BBC sitcom The Royle Family.
The advert, which was named The Man On The Moon, showed a young girl who spots a lonely old man on the Moon and decides to send him a telescope to give him a connection to Earth.
The partnership with Age UK had the tagline: “Show someone they’re loved this Christmas.”
In 2020, John Lewis mixed things up a bit by allowing singer Celeste to sing an original song for the Christmas advert.
The retail giant commissioned the 27-year-old British-Jamaican singer to produce a new track, titled A Little Love.
Her voice was the soundtrack to a campaign which focused on acts of kindness during the coronavirus pandemic.
In last year's Christmas advert, named An Unexpected Guest, a 20-year-old Brit School graduate called Lola Young sung along to Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder's 80s electro-pop classic, Together In Electric Dreams.
The ad follows a young boy called Nathan who sees an unexpected guest land in his back garden.
He shows his new friend and space traveller the true meaning of Christmas and all the traditions that come with the festive season.
