Who is Shaun Ryder? Singer joins new series of I’m a Celebrity

I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! is back and this time it is set in Kruger National Park, one of South Africa’s largest game reserves, and all the celebrities taking part have done their time in the jungle previously.

Carol Vorderman and ex-royal butler Paul Burrell are among those competing in the series.

ITV has promised that the new location will provide bigger and tougher challenges in a “harsher and more unforgiving” environment.

But for one contestant, the series has not started well. Shaun Ryder was left in agony during the night on Tuesday evening’s episode, as his replacement hip suddenly popped out. He was also left disgruntled at the surprise arrival of old rival Gillian McKeith in the camp.

Here’s everything you need to know about the contestant Shaun Ryder.

Who is Shaun Ryder?

Ryder, 60, is an English singer, songwriter and poet, who first appeared on the show in 2010, where he finished second, behind Stacey Solomon.

He rose to fame as the lead singer of Happy Mondays and in the late Eighties and early Nineties was an important figure in the Manchester cultural scene. The band’s most popular tracks include Step On and Loose Fit.

In 1993 he set up another band, Black Grape, with former Happy Mondays dancer Bez.

He previously struggled with heroin addiction but managed to kick the habit by taking up cycling.

The singer has six children and married his wife, Joanne, in 2010.

What was his early life like?

He grew up in Lancashire and left school at 13 to work on a building site.

His early life was portrayed in the 2002 British biographical comedy-drama film 24 Hour Party People – a semi-fictional account of Factory Records and the Manchester music scene of the time.

He was also the subject of Richard Macer’s BBC3 documentary Shaun Ryder: The Ecstasy and the Agony.

Ryder has also appeared in an episode of Would I Lie to You?, Celebrity Juice and Celebrity Mastermind, and in an episode of the comedy series Shameless, in which he played himself.

What happened when Ryder previously appeared on I’m a Celeb?

He appeared on I’m a Celebrity alongside Gillian McKeith in 2010 and the duo clashed on several occasions. Once, when the pair were forced to stand in freezing cold water, the Happy Mondays musician called McKeith “a f***ing irritating woman”, to which she replied: “You say nasty things all the time … your tone, everything. The way you speak to everyone.”

They also argued when McKeith told Ryder not to smoke in front of her.

“You f***ing what? I’ll smoke where I want, you can go in the f***ing toilet. I smoke where I want, don’t tell me where I can’t smoke,” he shot back.

After McKeith then asked him not to swear, he responded: “I’ll f***ing swear when I want to swear so f*** off.”

Ryder apologised, with McKeith later describing the pair as having a “love-hate relationship”, adding that she was often frightened of him.

But Ryder spoke far less warmly of McKeith, saying that she was “a bit of a d***” who just had no manners”.
