The story of the iconic Scottish DJ on today's Google Doodle drawing

Scottish DJ and songwriter Sophie Xeon is the latest name being celebrated by Google Doodles on the search engine's main page.

Google Doodles are "spontaneous celebrations" of local people, places and events and have been a part of the search engine for years now.

In the past, events and people like Halloween and American Native rights activist Hank Adams have been featured.

Discussing the latest homepage addition, Google said: "Today’s Doodle celebrates the 38th birthday of Scottish musician, producer, and DJ Sophie Xeon (SOPHIE), who is remembered for her acclaimed experimental pop and electronic music."

The video, which can be found on the Google-owned platform YouTube, has received nearly a million views and garnered almost a thousand comments.

Who is the late Scottish DJ and musician Sophie Xeon?

Sophie Xeon, also known as SOPHIE, is a Scottish songwriter, producer and DJ from Glasgow who rose to prominence after releasing singles like BIPP (2013) and Lemonade (2014).

In 2017, she publically came out as transgender before releasing an album titled Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides the following year.

For this, she earned a Grammy Award for the Best Dance/Electronic Album.

Over her career, she worked with a number of huge names like Charli XCX, Madonna and Let's Eat Grandma.

SOPHIE died in January 2021 after suffering an accidental fall in Athens, Greece.

Describing her impact, music magazine The Fader said that she was a "pioneering Scottish artist whose vibrant electronic productions expanded modern pop music's scope."

In June of this year, it was announced that her self-titled second album, which was reportedly nearly complete by the time of her death, would be released posthumously on September 27, 2024.
