Who Is Madelene Sagstrom's Caddie?

Shane Codd and Madelene Sagstrom at the 2024 AIG Women's Open.

Madelene Sagstrom is one the most recognisable players in European women's golf, with an LPGA Tour win in 2020 as well as four Solheim Cup appearances for Europe. Since turning pro in 2015, she has only worked with a handful of caddies - including her fiancé Jack Clarke and Ashleigh Buhai's husband, David.

Who Is Madelene Sagstrom's Caddie? Meet Shane Codd

Since 2021, Sagstrom has had Shane Codd on the bag - a caddie on the Ladies European Tour since 2004. Codd has headed the Caddies Association on the Ladies European Tour in the past, having previously been an assistant professional at Rosslare in Wexford. Before that, he worked as a sales assistant at a bakery in Wexford for around a year.

Sagstrom and Codd have enjoyed some great results in their three years together, with the highlight being a tied runner-up finish at the Women's Open at Carnoustie in 2021.

Otherwise, Sagstrom has produced several strong performances at other Majors since then, ending T4th at the 2022 AIG Women's Open, T13th at the 2022 Chevron Championship, and T12th at the 2024 Evian Championship.

While Sagstrom is now his boss, Codd has caddied for the likes of Becky Brewerton and Caroline Masson before, while the Irishman has also looped at two Olympics; with Mariajo Uribe of Colombia in Rio and then with Sagstrom in Tokyo.

Among Codd's list of other former bosses is Dame Laura Davies, and he was by her side when she won the Hero Honda Women’s Indian Open in New Delhi in 2010. That brief partnership came about as Davies' regular bagman was unable to obtain a visa, so the Irishman stepped in.

Speaking to the PLTCA (Professional Ladies Tour Caddie Association), Codd explained that the circumstances behind Davies' victory were even more extraordinary. He said: "She didn’t get her clubs until one hour before our first round tee time. She went out and shot -7, and won the tournament in a playoff."

Also per the PLTCA, Codd says there are so many good things about being a caddie. He said: "I love the opportunity to travel, the people I’ve met, the friendships I’ve created, and mainly the adrenaline rush coming down the stretch when doing well in a tournament."

Codd is married to former Tour player Rebecca Codd nee Coakley, with the couple - who got married in January 2020 - both from Ireland and having celebrated with a wedding breakfast at Castle Durrow. They have two children - a girl and a boy.
