Who is James Dyson - second richest billionaire who missed out on top rich list spot

The Sunday Times Rich List 2022 is out to remind the rest of us just how hugely wealthy the 1% really are.

It’s no secret that many members of the superwealthy have made Britain their home over the years.

Now though, the numbers are only getting bigger, as the total number of billionaires in the UK reached an all-time high of 177.

The wealthiest people in the UK right now are as rich as anyone has ever been in the country, as the list’s most wealthy reach a new bar not seen before.

The list incorporates a huge range of the uber-rich, from beer brewers to tech and oil tycoons.

Who is James Dyson, the UK’s second-richest person?

In second place on the list is billionaire inventor James Dyson, 75, known best for his development of market-leading vacuum technology.

He has climbed to the second spot from number four, leapfrogging the Reuben family and Sir Leonard Blavatnik.

Dyson’s vacuums are, of course, a household name and now the inventor is shifting his focus into wearable technology.

His new contraptions involve air purifying masks designed to improve the air quality of people living in polluted areas and also include noise-cancelling headphones.

Born in Norfolk, Dyson attended the Royal College of Art where he began inventing.

He soon came up with the Ballbarrow, which replaced the wheel of a wheelbarrow with a ball and formed the foundation for the iconic Dyson vacuum ball design.

In a fascinating interview with Fast Company , Dyson made it clear that failure was important for success.

He said: “I made 5,127 prototypes of my vacuum before I got it right. There were 5,126 failures. But I learned from each one.

“That’s how I came up with a solution. So I don’t mind failure. I’ve always thought that schoolchildren should be marked by the number of failures they’ve had.

“The child who tries strange things and experiences lots of failures to get there is probably more creative.”

Dyson misses out on to top rich list spot to the Hinduja family by £5.47billion, despite seeing his own wealth increase by a massive £6.7billion since the last year.

Who are the richest people in the UK?

According to the Sunday Times Rich List 2022, the richest people in the UK are Sri and Gopi Hinduja and their family, who have a net worth of £28.472billion, an increase of £11.472billion on last year.

Gopi, 82, based in London, and his son Dheeraj, 50, based in Leeds, have taken the family towards green transportation.

With electric vehicles being developed in the form of zero-emission buses and trucks, they also work across multiple other sectors including oil and banking.

The Hinduja Group now owns major petrol firm Gulf.

Brothers Sri and Gopi have topped the list for the fourth time, now reaching their biggest total fortune in the history of the Rich List.

The Reuben family, at number three, are part of the consortium that bought Newcastle United Football Club from Mike Ashley.

At number four is Sir Leonard Blavatnik, who goes by Sir Len. Born in Soviet Ukraine and brought up north of Moscow, he has gone to great lengths to cut ties with Russia despite it being the country where he originally made part of his fortune.

However, his final business connections to the country were severed in 2013 and he himself is a joint British and American citizen.
