Giuseppe Garibaldi was an Italian freedom fighter, military general, naval captain - and inspired the colour of Nottingham Forest's kits.
Born in 1807, Garibaldi was hugely influential in the unification of Italy in the nineteenth century. For this, and his opposition to the Pope, he became massively popular in Britain.
His name travelled far and wide as his influence grew. A Garibaldi music band appeared in Nottingham in 1860; the following year the Mechanics’ Hall heard a lecture from a speaker on his adventures.
