Who is Daniel Sloss, the comic speaking out against Russell Brand?

There was only one comedian who stepped up to speak on the record, without anonymity, on the allegations made against Russell Brand. He is Daniel Sloss.

The comedian was willing to talk to Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Times and Sunday Times about the sexual allegations against Russell Brand and already has a reputation for confronting the darkest subjects during his stand-up sets.

In the past during sets he has confronted the rape of a female friend and even spoken about his experiences of being groomed online by a paedophile, and yet again he did not shy away from speaking on controversial subjects.

On Saturday September 16, Channel 4 Dispatches aired a special on Brand exposing the allegations against the comedian. Russell Brand: In Plain Sight shared the stories of the four women making allegations and included Sloss discussing the allegations. Brand strenuously denied the allegations against him stressing that all of his past relationships have been consensual.

On Monday more women were reported to have come forward to make allegations against Russell Brand as the head of a parliamentary committee called for police to begin a criminal investigation into his conduct.

“Several” new alleged victims were said to have contacted The Times and The Sunday Times in the wake of the claims of sexual assaults, including rape, made by four women to the papers and the Dispatches programme. The Sunday Times also disclosed that it had compiled a list of least 10 more potential victims whose cases had yet to be brought to public attention.

But who is Daniel Sloss? Here is what we know.

Who is Daniel Sloss?

Daniel Sloss is a Scottish comedian aged 33 who began his career while working with fellow Scottish comic Frankie Boyle.

He started off by helping Boyle to write jokes before debuting his first-ever show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2008, which was entitled Life in 2D.

He had more performances in Scotland and in particular the Edinburgh Festival and did a UK tour in 2012, Daniel Sloss – The Show, before he was given his own Netflix two-hour special in 2018 and toured the world with his show NOW.

As well as performing, in 2021 the comedian published his first book, Everyone You Hate is Going to Die.

What did Daniel Sloss say about Russell Brand?

During the Dispatches programme, Sloss went on the record to claim that female comedians were known for warning each other about Brand. He even told of a WhatsApp group whose members warned each other about Brand and his behaviour.

He said: “I know for many many years women have been warning each other about Russell” adding there were “many stories with varying degrees of severity”.

Sloss said: “He was a big name, big, big household name. If you were a comedian and got to gig with him you’d be gigging with a celebrity.

“I’m stood in bars with agents, promoters, channel commissioners and I’m hearing these allegations and rumours with Russell in the same room, and later on he would be on a movie, on a television show, he would be hosting something. He was still being employed.”

What has Russell Brand said?

Brand has denied all of the allegations reported in the joint investigation by The Times and Channel 4 Dispatches, and even released a video prior to the report being released denying everything said about him.

In the video posted on Friday, he stressed that all his past relationships were consensual, before accusing the media of a “co-ordinated attack” against him, calling them a “litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks”.

He said: “Amidst this litany of astonishing, rather baroque attacks are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute.

“These allegations pertain to the time when I was working in the mainstream, when I was in the newspapers all the time, when I was in the movies and as I have written about extensively in my books, I was very, very promiscuous.”
