Connor Hellebuyck's Early Life And Background
Connor Charles Hellebuyck was born on 19 May 1993 in Commerce Township, Michigan. He is the son of Chuck, a technical training engineer and former stock car racing driver, and Erin, an artist and children's books author. He is the middle of three siblings, and his older brother Chris also played hockey before retiring in the 2016–17 season.
Hellebuyck played one season in the North American Hockey League with the Odessa Jackalopes. He was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the fifth round, 130th overall, of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He then spent two years with the UMass Lowell River Hawks, where he received the inaugural Mike Richter Award as the top goaltender in college hockey. He was selected in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
NHL Career With The Winnipeg Jets
Hellebuyck began his professional career during the 2014–15 season with the St. John's IceCaps, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Winnipeg Jets. He became the Jets' starting goaltender during the 2016–17 NHL season, where his performances established him as one of the league's leading goaltenders.
Hellebuyck has compiled a record marked by major individual honours and decisive performances at club and international level. He is a Hart Memorial Trophy winner as the NHL's most valuable player, and has won the Vezina Trophy three times as the league's best goaltender. He has also won the William M. Jennings Trophy twice for allowing the fewest goals.
Olympic Gold And The 'Secretary Of Defense' Nickname
Internationally, Hellebuyck represents the United States. At the 2026 Winter Olympics, he served as the team's starting goaltender and helped secure Olympic gold for the first time since 1980. The final against Canada ended in a 2–1 overtime victory.
Hellebuyck recorded 41 saves during the game, repeatedly stopping late Canadian pressure. Although Jack Hughes scored the winning goal, Hellebuyck's performance was hailed as the defining factor. His display has been compared with Jim Craig's 1980 Olympic performance.
Following the victory, he was dubbed the 'Secretary of Defense'. The nickname gained traction after US official Pete Hegseth further signal-boosted praise for his performance.

Hellebuyck and his wife Andrea have two children. In 2023, he co-authored two children's books about mental health with Thom Van Dycke titled 'Bucky Beats the Blues' and 'Is Something Wrong With Weasel?'. The books focus on emotional well-being for younger readers.
