Camila Giorgi beamed as she enjoyed her first WTA victory in nearly two years against Swedish qualifier Rebecca Peterson, beating her 7-6, 1-6, 6-2 at the 2023 Mérida Open Akron in Mexico.
The match lasted two hours and 23 minutes and followed wins over No 4 seed Katerina Siniakova in the semi-final and No 2 seed Sloane Stephens in the quarter-final in the WTA 250 competition.
The No 46 player, who is 31, has now won four of her 10 career WTA finals and had not experienced triumph on the tour since the Canadian Open in August 2021.
But, given that the total prize pool is only about £200,000, it won't have a significant impact on her nearly $5 million in career earnings.
