Six months after Ahmad al-Sharaa led the ousting of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad he was shaking hands with Donald Trump, who would go on to describe him as a “young, attractive guy”.
The compliment, conveyed to American press aboard Air Force One during Trump’s sweeping trade and diplomacy tour of the Middle East, came after the US president met the former al-Qaeda figure to talk about Syria’s “chance at greatness”.
