The Tory leadership debate has ended, with Liz Truss winning out over Rishi Sunak to become the UK's new Prime Minister.
The former Foreign Secretary, 47, maintained a lead in the polls among Tory members, despite an excruciating U-turn on her public sector pay plan and several other embarrassing blunders.
Truss may be PM now, but she has been caught up in a personal scandal that nearly ended her political career in the past.
She engaged in an affair with a fellow MP, which threatened her marriage, though her career has gone from strength to strength since.
Is Liz Truss still married?
Yes, Truss is married to Hugh O’Leary, who, like his wife, is a qualified accountant.
After attending the London School of Economics, he still works as an accountant, leaving the brutal world of politics to his wife.
His age is unknown, though it's believed he is around 47 like Truss.
They married in 2000 after having met at the Tory party conference in 1997.
Reflecting on the day they met, Truss told You magazine in 2019: “I invited him ice-skating and he sprained his ankle.”
Who did Liz Truss have an affair with?
Truss found herself under scrutiny in 2006 when reports surfaced of her affair with then-Tory MP Mark Field, who at the time was Shadow Minister for London.
Truss met Field around the year 2000 when she was 25 years old and already making waves in the party.
Field was assigned as her political mentor in a move to help her career.
The affair lasted for 18 months until it came to an end in June 2005.
Speaking at the time, former Conservative Party leader David Cameron said: "She is an excellent candidate and I very much hope she will be the candidate."
The Daily Mail asked her husband O’Leary about the affair, to which he replied: “I don’t want to talk about it.”
In 2019, Truss said: “I am really happily married.”
Field's 12-year marriage ended when the scandal broke, but Truss and O'Leary reconciled and now share two daughters, Liberty and Frances, who live with them in their Norfolk home.
