Who could be in Erik ten Hag's 4 Man Utd groups including peak stars and underperformers

It's no secret that Erik ten Hag has a major rebuild on his hands at Manchester United.

The new Red Devils boss will oversee wholesale personnel changes at the club as he attempts to turn around the club's fortunes.

Mirror Football exclusively revealed that the number of departures at Old Trafford could reach double figures in the upcoming window.

Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani, Juan Mata and Lee Grant are all set to leave as free agents while Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Alex Telles and Anthony Martial could also join them.

Ralf Rangnick admitted there could be a similar amount of new faces arriving at the club, but what about the current crop of players who will stay put. It's claimed the Dutchman has divided the majority of his squad into four categories - peak, entering their peak, bright futures and underperformers - as he decides which players are going to be a key part of United's immediate and long-term future, according to the Daily Mail.

There is no space on the reported list for Harry Maguire or Cristiano Ronaldo, however. The United skipper has been under intense scrutiny throughout the season while it remains to be seen if Ronaldo will buy into Ten Hag's project with United unlikely to be playing Champions League football next season.

So which category do the remaining players fit under? We've had a look below.

Peak

Bruno Fernandes might have suffered a below-par year for his standards but so has every player at United this term. The midfielder deserves the benefit of the doubt given his impact since moving from Sporting Lisbon and will be an integral part of Ten Hag's plans.

Raphael Varane is also in this bracket as a full pre-season should do him the world of good and if he stays away from injuries, United can see him return to the form that saw him become a World Cup and four-time Champions League winner.

David de Gea has been the silver lining for United this season, rediscovering the form that saw him considered one of the best keepers in the world, while Luke Shaw is in a similar position to Fernandes where this season should go down as a one-off for the defender.

Entering their peak

Scott McTominay 's development has been a bright spot for United this season and that should continue under Ten Hag who could potentially unlock even more of his potential.

Marcus Rashford has been a shell of the player that United fans are accustomed to seeing and even though he has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, the England forward reportedly wants to work with Ten Hag which could revive his career at the club.

Donny van de Beek will return from his loan at Everton and will finally get his chance to showcase his talents and a reunion with Ten Hag could realistically bring the best out of the midfielder.

Bright future

With so many first-team players leaving this summer, there will be a golden opportunity for youngsters to stake a claim, especially with Ten Hag's tendency to put his trust in inexperienced players.

Hannibal Mejbri, Alejandro Garnacho , James Garner , Amad, Shola Shoretire , Tahith Chong , Facundo Pellistri and Teden Mengi are all players with raw talent, but they have barely featured in the first team under the previous managers. Ten Hag's arrival means it will be a clean slate for everyone who ends up staying and they will at least be given the chance to realise that potential.

Jadon Sancho will be a big player for United in the years to come, despite an underwhelming debut season, while Anthony Elanga is also a bright prospect. Dean Henderson will play second fiddle to De Gea in the short term but he can still carve out a career at Old Trafford.

Underperformers

The majority of the 'underperformers' will seek pastures new but United can't sell everyone in the one window and there will be plenty that will remain who will need to drastically improve their form to prove they have a future under Ten Hag.

Victor Lindelof will likely get some chances in the first team given Bailly and Maguire's uncertain futures, but he can't keep making high-profile mistakes.

Fred 's attitude and work ethic can never be questioned but the jury is still out on whether the Brazilian has the quality to be a regular for United.

Diogo Dalot could find some playing time if Wan-Bissaka departs but he is another one who needs to show more. It's been reported that Ten Hag will give Andreas Pereira , who is on loan at Flamengo, a chance to resurrect his career at United, but there is no doubt he has been a massive flop so far.

Brandon Williams and Axel Tuanzebe are set to return from their respective loan spells at Norwich City and Napoli but the pair will need to do something special in pre-season to convince Ten Hag to be a part of his plans moving forward.
