BBC World Cup 2026 studio.

The World Cup's last-16 stage is throwing up another mouth-watering clash.

Portugal and Spain go head to head on Monday to reach the quarter final where they will be pitted against the winner from USA and Belgium's knockout encounter.

The European Championship holders are the only nation to have reached this stage of the tournament without shipping a single goal after Mexico's loss to England.

They are also the first European nation to keep clean sheets in their opening four games since Switzerland in 2006 and stand on the cusp of another record.

One more shoutout against the Selecao will confirm La Roja as the first team in history to record six consecutive World Cup clean sheets, with one also in the bag from 2022.

However they will face arguably their sternest test so far this summer as Cristiano Ronaldo hopes to bookend his sixth and final World Cup appearance in spectacular fashion.

The 41-year-old produced a star-studded performance to help Roberto Martinez's side squeeze past Croatia in their fiercely contested round-of-32 showdown.

The game starts at 8pm UK time with BBC One showing all the action live.

Coverage starts from 7.30pm with Gabby Logan presenting from the Beeb's Salford studio with punditry provided by Wayne Rooney, Cesar Azpilicueta, Ellen White and Spanish football expert, journalist and broadcaster Guillem Balague.

Former Chelsea full-back Azpilicueta is well-placed to offer insight on Spain's tactics as a staple of their senior ranks with 44 caps between 2013 and 2023.
