White Sox’ Liam Hendriks Shares Uplifting Message Amid Cancer Battle

White Sox closer Liam Hendriks has been sidelined for the start of the 2023 MLB season after revealing he's battling non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

The team provided an uplifting update on his status ahead of Opening Day, and during Chicago's home opener on Monday, Hendriks made a special announcement that was aired on the big screen at the stadium.

In his video address, Hendriks revealed that he's entering the final round of chemotherapy and expects to return to the White Sox soon.

“I just want to let you know I'm starting my last round of chemo today, so I'll see you guys on the South Side soon. Play ball,” said Hendriks ahead of the Monday's first pitch against the Giants.

Hendriks first shared his diagnosis in January, but provided the most positive update on his recovery during Monday's home opener.

While a timetable for his return to action remains unclear, the 34-year-old indicated that it won't be too long before he’s ready to get back on the field.

The 34-year-old did not participate in Spring Training but was not placed on the 60-day IL, leaving the door open for his return at any point early on in the season. Had he been placed on the 60-day IL, Hendriks would not be eligible to return until some point in June.

Last season, the right-hander made his third All-Star Game, logging a 2.81 ERA with 37 saves across 58 appearances in his second year with the White Sox.
