CLEVELAND — The White Sox’ scheduled game against the Cleveland Guardians Sunday at Progressive Field has been postponed due to unplayable field conditions.
Managers, coaches and trainers met more than once, assessing the field. There was standing water on the outfield warning track from rain Saturday and Sunday.
The game was called about three hours after the scheduled starting time. The Guardians said a makeup date will be announced at a later date.
Sunday’s game is the last scheduled meeting between the teams in Cleveland. The teams have a mutual open date Thursday, Sept. 15, before the Sox open a weekend series in Detroit. The Sox host Cleveland Sept. 20-22.
Right-handers Dylan Cease (12-5, 2.09) and Aaron Civale (2-5, 5.63) were the scheduled starters in the finale of the series. Cease will be moved up two days in the rotation to start a three-game series in Baltimore Tuesday. Michael Kopech, as scheduled, will start against the Royals for the team’s one-game stop Monday in Kansas City.
