Whitby’s whale bone arch has been removed as part of a controversial replacement plan for one of the north of England’s best known landmarks.
The arch, which has featured in countless numbers of tourist photographs of the seaside town and its abbey, was erected in 2002 after it was given as a gift by Whitby’s twin town of Barrow, in Alaska.
