The Starward Distillery from Melbourne, bagged 12 double gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2022. The distillery scooped the awards for its Starward Solera, Nova and Small Batch whisky and the latest new release has arrived in UK supermarkets at a bargain price.
The whisky, which is served to guests in upmarket London hotel the Savoy, is priced at just £25, down from £35, in Waitrose and is a Mirror Choice top pick for an affordable top class single malt whisky.
Our reviewer says: "Tasting Starward Left Field without any ice or mixers is lightly biting into a juicy apple. The fruit flavours burst out from the beginning before leaving a lovely richer red wine feel afterwards. It is a whisky that I would enjoy on its own. It feels more 'English' than Starward's other offerings, reminding me a little of the heavy fruit from my choice for best whisky of 2023, Cotswolds. I can't really give it any higher compliment."
The whisky, which has been designed to be used with mixers and in cocktails such as an Old Fashioned, which is unusual for a single malt whisky. Often single malts are designed to be enjoyed with just a splash of water, with many enthusiasts also rejected placing ice in the whisky.
Starward’s Left-Field was announced as one of only six whiskies globally to be awarded the inaugural trophy for the Whisky Highball category at the IWSC at the 2022 Mixer Awards
