Sulky Spanish striker Joselu is the latest player to come out with a sour grapes interview after launching a trio of excuses for their shock defeat to Scotland.
The veteran Espanyol frontman and Newcastle United flop claimed Scotland ‘didn’t play football’, Spain were denied a ‘clear penalty’ and that Scott McTominay only scored one of his two goals due to a mistake from Spain. Steve Clarke’s men overpowered the three-times European champions this week with a famous 2-0 win at Hampden to put them in pole position to qualify for Euro 2024.
But a series of seething Spaniards have been wheeled out to make excuses led by captain Rodri accusing Scotland of playing 'rubbish football. And both David Garcia and Dani Ceballos bleated about the state of the Hampden pitch. Now Joselu, who scored a dream double on his international debut against Norway days before turning 33 at the weekend, is the latest in the conveyor belt of complainers to have a moan.
He said: "When you lose there must be self-criticism and look at things to correct, but that penalty I didn't get would have changed everything. Scotland didn't play football and their first goal was only because of a slip from Pedro Porro, which can happen to anyone.
"It was one of the games where we had a feeling we would have to do a lot more than the opposition to score a goal. I am convinced that nine times out of ten we would have won that game. I was denied a clear penalty.
"The ball didn't seem to want to go in for us. Scotland made a lot of fouls during the game that stopped the dynamics of our attack, but we still had chances. We are humans and had a bad day. Scotland knew we were going to dominate the game and they knew what game they wanted to play, they were lucky to get that goal so early. There was a feeling of anger after the game because we were all exhausted and frustrated. But there are six games left and we will be united for it."
