Conservative mayoral hopeful Susan Hall has pledged to expand a Night Tube service in London to help women get home safely.
The Tory politician, 69, who is running against Sadiq Khan for the London Mayor's position, said she would introduce an all-night service on the Hammersmith & City line on weekends if elected.
“Not only is this an opportunity to revive our night-time economy and help London become a truly 24-hour city, but it is also an important part of my women’s safety plan,” she said.
“I’m hoping that people will feel safer, especially women. With CCTV in those carriages, I think they would feel much safer, and happier to stay out later.”
People in Hammersmith, however, already have access to the Picadilly line that operates night services at weekends.
Hall has largely centred her campaign on crime and safety, suggesting her rival hadn’t done enough to protect Londoners.
Stoking fears of “out-of-control” crime in London, Hall said she would hire more police and ensure more night Tubes to help women feel safer.
Khan said he would similarly match the pledge of expanding Night Tube services if re-elected at the start of May.
Hall, who previously voted against freezing fare prices on the Tube, also wants to scrap the expanded Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) fee. This is even though funds raised from this are partially invested into Transport for London (TfL) and public transport.
It is unclear if implementing more Night Tubes is feasible given TfL's tight finances, which have delayed expansions in the past.
Night services operate on the Victoria, Jubilee, Central, Piccadilly, and Northern lines — and parts of the London Overground.
Here are which London Underground lines offer Night Tube services and how frequently they run.
How frequently does each Night Tube line run and where?
The Night Tube runs on Fridays and Saturdays until 5am, after which the normal Tube services resume. This means that five Underground lines have 24-hour Tubes running all weekend.
Victoria line
Passengers can catch the Victoria line every 10 minutes, with the night service stopping at all stations.
Central line
Trains run between White City and Leytonstone, approximately every 20 minutes from Ealing Broadway to White City, and from Leytonstone to Loughton via Hainault.
There are no Night Tube services between North Acton and West Ruislip, Loughton and Epping, or Woodford and Hainault.
Jubilee line
Night trains are in operation across the entire line.
Northern line
Passengers travelling overnight can travel between Morden and Camden Town and from Camden Town to High Barnet or Edgeware.
No Night Tube services operate on the Bank and Mill Hill East branches.
Piccadilly line
Trains run on average every 10 minutes between Cockfosters and Heathrow Terminal 5. There is no Night Tube service on the Terminal 4 loop, or between Acton Town and Uxbridge.
London Overground
The London Overground Night Service runs between New Cross Gate and Highbury & Islington on Friday and Saturday nights.
