Electrical retailer Currys says it has seen a huge increase in demand for electric fans and air conditioning units over the last decade, with sales gradually rising by 100% over the last decade. It has found a correlation between demand and the slowly rising average temperatures which according to the Met Office have increased by 14% from 8.8C to 10C over the same period.
This summer’s heatwave has also seen sales hit record figures, up by 275% when compared with the summer of 2022, with Dyson devices racking up the highest figures.
Currys has delved into its product range to make a recommendation for shoppers looking for the most energy-efficient fan or air-con unit. Analysing details like temperature regulating features and power consumption, the tech expert sieved through their product portfolio and finally landed on the DYSON Pure Hot+Cool. The device’s in-built thermostat was tested in a 35 m3 chamber by experts who found that it can save you up to 30% in running costs when maintaining room temperature when compared with continuous operation on a power consumption of 2050W.
Will Jones, Trends Expert at Currys said: “Awareness of climate change is higher than it has ever been, but the huge increase in fan and air-con sales we’ve seen really is a stark reminder of the emergency we’re facing globally. We all can and must do our part for the environment which is why we at Currys to continue to support a number of sustainable initiatives, including our Cash for Trash scheme which combats e-waste by offering shoppers a £5 voucher in exchange for any old or broken tech they hand in for recycling.”
