Tempers boiled over at Anfield on Sunday afternoon as Liverpool got the better of Manchester City in the Premier League.
There were plenty of talking points during a heated affair between the two sides as so often has been the case in previous meetings in recent years.
With Liverpool leading 1-0, with what proved to be the winning goal from Mohamed Salah, frustration was growing as the game petered out due to a number of fouls going unpunished by referee Anthony Taylor.
This was in keeping with how the contest had been officiated during the opening 45 minutes, but things began to spiral out of control when Bernardo Silva made no attempt to play the ball by clinging on to Salah's shirt in a bid to bring the Egyptian to the ground.
The Portuguese star then appeared to kick out at Salah before pushing Virgil van Dijk, avoiding a yellow card in the process. Enraged by this being overlooked, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp screamed in the ear of assistant referee Gary Beswick before being given his marching orders by fourth official Andy Madley.
A one-game ban is typically the punishment dished out for managers dismissed during top-flight games, but the FA will decide whether to charge, warn or take action against Klopp once they receive Taylor's referee report. An official decision may not be reached this week, meaning the German could yet be on the touchline on Wednesday evening for the visit of West Ham and Saturday's trip to Nottingham Forest.
Issuing an apology over his actions after the match, Klopp said: "It is about emotion, of course. So red card, my fault, I went over the top in the moment. I don’t think I was disrespectful to anybody but if you look at the pictures… I know myself, I am 55 and the way I look at that moment is already worth a red card.
“I lost it in that moment and that’s not okay but a little bit as an excuse I would like to mention how can you not whistle that foul (on Salah), how on Earth is that possible?
“During the game I agreed with Pep completely that Anthony Taylor just let the things run, but why would you do that? I’ve heard now that people said it was Anfield that made the VAR decision. It is a foul on Fabinho. Is it not enough to pull someone down?
“And then Ali has the hand on the ball (when challenged by Erling Haaland), that’s a save or not? There was already that first moment where Pep and I were pretty animated for the same reason, we were not arguing with each other.
“And then I had the perfect view of the linesman (for the Salah incident), we were 1-0 up and you get a free-kick there or they counter-attack, and that’s pretty much a 100% difference. And that was the moment when I snapped. Again, I am not proud of it but it happened.”
