Where Titans’ 2021 roster ranked in ‘snap-weighted age’

The Tennessee Titans were among the oldest teams in the NFL in 2021 based on “snap-weighted age,” according to Football Outsiders.

In case you haven’t heard of this before, snap-weighted age (SWA) is used to figure out “a team’s age not by just averaging the ages of the players on the roster, but by weighting the age of each player by the number of snaps he played in the regular season.”

The Titans finished as the fifth-oldest team in the NFL, coming in with a total SWA of 27.2 years. Tennessee’s offensive and special teams SWA ranked even higher, coming in at the second-oldest (28.4 years) and third-oldest (26.9 years), respectively.

On the other side of the ball, Tennessee was much younger, with their defensive SWA landing at 26.0 years, the 10th youngest.

The Titans have been among the older teams in the NFL overall the past few seasons, so this comes as no surprise, even during a campaign in which the team fielded an NFL record 91 players.

The Titans have seen an infusion of youth on their defense in recent years, and that same defense was among the best in the NFL in 2021 and a huge reason why the team had as good of a regular season as it did.

With the future blindingly bright on defense, the Titans now have to figure out how they can get back to their 2019 and 2020 form on offense. If they can, or even come close, Tennessee will be a force to be reckoned with in 2022.
