Where The Sopranos cast are now after Paul Herman's death - tragedy and pop star

Sadly, another beloved member of The Sopranos family has passed away.

Paul Herman, who was best known for playing Beansie in the long-running HBO series, died on his 76th birthday.

His Sopranos co-star Michael Imperioli (Christopher Moltisanti) took to Instagram to pay tribute to the veteran actor, who also starred in Goodfellas and The Irishman alongside Robert De Niro.

"Our friend and colleague Paul Herman has passed away. Paulie was just a great dude," wrote Imperioli.

"A first-class storyteller and raconteur and one hell of an actor. Goodfellas, Once Upon a Time in America, The Irishman, and of course The Sopranos are some highlights.

"Paulie lived around the corner from me the last few years and I am glad we got to spend some time together before he left us.

"I’ll miss him. Lots of love to his family, friends, and community of actors and filmmakers."

Paul was part of the American crime drama, which first burst onto our screens in January 1999 and due to its incredible popularity ran for a whopping 86 episodes until 2007.

Despite going down in history as one of the best TV shows ever devised, the creator of the cult Mafia series did reveal it almost never got made because the first script didn't feature a single episode.

Thankfully, David Chase completely rewrote the show and added some brutal deaths - with 88 unfortunate souls losing their lives across six seasons.

At the centre was the late, great James Gandolfini as mob king Tony Soprano, who struggled to balance family life while running a dangerous criminal organisation.

While several of the show's cast members were famous before they joined it propelled many into stardom and made household names out of Gandolfini, Edie Falco and Lorraine Bracco.

The Sopranos paved the way for other violent crime shows and without it there probably would not have been the likes of The Wire, Breaking Bad or Mad Men.

While most of the cast are still acting, some have completely changed their career paths and there has been a failed music career, a professional poker player and one even set up their own vegan pasta company.

There have also been some tragic deaths including leading man Gandolfini and Joseph Siravo last year.

Here is a look at what happened to The Sopranos cast.

James Gandolfini - Tony Soprano

The main protagonist of the whole series, Tony is loosely based on real-life New Jersey mobster Vinny Ocean.

The unofficial boss of the family, Tony had to balance conflict within his family life with running an organised crime operation.

Ruthless Tony was a bit of a violent sociopath but also had a soft side and was prone to having panic attacks so he would see a psychiatrist.

Hailed as on the the very first likeable 'anti-heroes' in TV, some fans were furious at the end of the series as his fate was not revealed.

Actor James Gandolfini was best known for the role which won him three Emmy Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards and a Golden Globe.

After the series ended he went on to become a producer but sadly died from a heart attack in Rome at the age of 51 in 2013.

His son Michael will play a younger version of his dad's character in prequel film The Many Saints of Newark.

Edie Falco - Carmela Soprano

Carmela was Tony's trophy wife who was well aware their fortune was built on blood money but decided to turn a blind eye.

But their wealth wasn't enough and she struggled to deal with her husband's infidelity and raising their two kids while surrounded by violence.

Actress Edie Falco won three Emmy awards, two Golden Globes and five Screen Actors Guild Awards for her portrayal of Carmela.

She also starred in Law & Order, Oz and Sunshine State, while playing the main role in Nurse Jackie from 2009 to 2015.

Tony's spoilt and troubled daughter Meadow was aware and resentful of her father's criminal enterprise and her family's complicity in it

She started to learn the consequences of their way of life as the seasons went on and at the end was planning her wedding to Patrick Parisi, the son of one of her dad's capos.

Actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler was only 17 when the show first aired and hilariously initially thought she would have to sing soprano.

She appeared in a Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast as Belle between 2002 and 2003 and Cinderella at Madison Square Garden in 2001.

She has guest-starred in episodes of Entourage, How I Met Your Mother and Ugly Betty and appeared in a music video for The Lonely Island.

The actress attempted her own music career but her album Here to Heaven flopped and se later admitted it was "embarrassing".

The youngest child of Tony and Carmela, AJ was a chronic underachiever with self-esteem issues.

At the start he always struggled with failing to live up to his father's many expectations but the illusion was eventually shattered and he had a battle with depression.

Actor Robert Iler went on to appear in Law & Order, Saturday Night Live and was in Pizza Hut commercials.

In 2001 he was arrested for the robbery of two teenagers and possession of marijuana. He pleaded guilty to a single charge of larceny and was given three years' probation.

Since The Sopranos ended he has struggled with addiction but has been sober since 2013.

Christopher was Tony's distantly-related cousin and protege who rose up the ranks during the series.

Tony was a father figure to Christopher, who was volatile, impulsive and would often be left frustrated by his lack of notoriety.

Christopher struggled with major drug and alcohol addictions and his violent relationship with long-term girlfriend Adriana La Cerva, who he was supposed to marry but grassed her up to Tony when she confessed to being a mole.

He was supposed to be Tony's successor but after causing a car crash while driving him home the mob boss decided he wasn't suitable and suffocated his injured nephew.

Actor Michael Imperoli, who had already appeared in the gangster film Goodfellas, earned a Primetime Emmy for his portrayal in 2004.

He went on to play Detective Ray Carling in the US adaptation of BBC police drama Life On Mars and followed fellow Sopranos cast members into the Law & Order series.

Tony Sirico - Paulie Gualtieri

Paulie 'Walnuts' was one of Tony's right-hand men and carried out hits on his boss' enemies and disloyal friends.

The chief henchman rose up the ranks to become the underboss of the crime family and he was fiercely loyal to Tony.

Actor Tony Sirico originally auditioned to be Uncle Junior but agreed to play Paulie as long as his character did not become a rat.

He has played gangsters in a number of films including Goodfellas, Mob Queen and Mickey Blue Eyes.

The actor was also the voice of Vinny Griffin in Family Guy - the new pet dog who replaced Brian for one episode.

Steven Van Zandt - Silvio Dante

In 2014 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his work with Springsteen and also founded his own band - Little Steven and The Disciples of Soul.

After The Sopranos the music producer and songwriter starred and co-wrote Netflix series Lilyhammer and appeared in The Christmas Chronicles in 2018.

Bobby was actually a strange character in the show because he was loyal to his wife and kind-hearted.

A senior member of Junior's crew, Bobby ended up caring for his former boss when he suffered from cancer.

He rose up the ranks of the organisation and even became Tony's brother-in-law when he married his sister Janice.

Actor Steven R. Schirripa is also known for playing Detective Anthony Abtemarco in Blue Bloods.

Having left acting behind, he became a producer and starting writing books playing on his mob persona as well as children's stories.

In 2014 he launched his own range of organic vegan pasta sauces under the business name of Uncle Steve's Italian Specialties Group.

Dominic Chianese - Corrado 'Junior' Soprano

However, power-hungry Junior found out and tried to assassinate his nephew so he could have total control of the family.

In later seasons he became frail and started suffering from dementia.

Famous for playinh Johnny Ola in The Godfather Part II, actor Dominic Chianese went on to appear in Boardwalk Empire and The Good Wife.

Andrea Donna de Matteo - Adriana La Cerva

The vain club manager loved the Mafia lifestyle and was obsessed with money and fame.

By the end of season 3 she was targeted nu the FBI as a weak spot in the family and she became a mole, but did refuse to reveal their deepest secrets.

However, her deception eventually caught up with her when she confessed all to Christopher, who was more loyal to the mob than his partner.

Christopher told Tony and Adriana was taken to the middle of the woods by Silvio and shot dead.

Actress Andrea Donna de Matteo went on to play Joey Tribbiani's sister Gina in Friends spin-off Joey.

Dr Jennifer Melfi was Tony's psychiatrist who knew all his deepest secrets.

Tony started visiting her after struggling with panic attacks but members of his family feared she knew too much and could testify against him in court.

Equally repulsed and fascinated by Tony's confessions, Jennifer became his close confident and continued helping him despite being warned off.

Actress Lorraine Bracco had already become famous in a mobster movie, playing leading character Henry Hill's troubled wife in Martin Scorsese epic Goodfellas in 1990.

She was originally supposed to be playing Tony's wife Carmela, but Lorraine said she didn't want an identical role to Goodfellas and desired more of a challenge playing a psychiatrist.

Gerry added: "He was a true gent to boot and as you well know hard to find that mutual bond and sincerity. Acting has always been a passion and finding true friends that lift you up and support was often difficult.

"Myself, Joe, Michael Rispoli [who played Jackie Aprile Sr.} and Jimmy Gandolfini [Tony Soprano] always supported each other even when up for the same roles, it’s how we rolled."
