It seems unfair to take Now and Then, the final words and sounds from The Beatles and immediately figure out where they belong in the band’s prodigious output.
But, this is what we do. I will tell you that as a Beatles superfan, this was the toughest thing to do. How do you separate the emotion of hearing the four of them together — virtually, but still — from a song that might have taken a different shape had they all been alive to put it together in person?
A few years ago, I ranked every Beatles song they ever wrote — leaving out the covers, which I regret now! — from No. 188 to 1. And now, I’ve added the final single to the mix.
