Where is hot in October? Here’s where to go on holiday this autumn

With the UK’s August heatwaves just a distant memory already, here’s where you can still soak up the sun this October. Despite the drop in temperature here, you won’t have to go far to find warmer climes.

Jetting away in October half-term is often a cheaper way to enjoy a family getaway without paying August prices. In fact, for young families travelling outside the height of summer can be a sensible option to avoid those uncomfortable and dangerously hot days.

There are many European locations where the sun’s still shining, meaning there’s no need to go long haul if you don’t want to. From Greece to Malta, here are just a few of the holiday destinations still hot enough to enjoy in October.

1. Paphos, Cyprus

In October Cyprus boasts temperatures of up to 26.7C in the southern city of Paphos, the Met Office reports. Visitors can expect around ten hours of sunshine a day and sea temperatures averaging 24C - so there’s still plenty of paddling potential.

2. Málaga, Spain

In October the popular holiday destination of Malaga averages high temperatures of 24C and low temperatures of 15C. There may be a few ‘short’ rain showers, but nothing that can dampen the holiday spirit, Thomas Cook reports.

3. Valletta, Malta

Located between Sicily and the North African coast Malta enjoys warmer temperatures than most of Europe in October. Holiday makers can expect an average top temperature of 25C and a minimum of 19C, TUI states. The country’s capital, Valletta, is said to have the warmest autumn and winter temperatures on the island nation.

4. Tenerife, Canary Islands

Tenerife is the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands located off West Africa. The tropical island is a four and a half hour flight from most UK airports which makes it a popular destination for late autumn family getaways. Temperatures in October average 24C with a “58% chance of a perfect sunny day and a 42% chance of seeing some clouds”, TUI reports.

5. Crete, Greek Island

Crete is Greece’s most southern holiday island, with temperatures in October averaging 20C. It may be cooler but there’s a 62% chance of sun and sea temperatures will remain a warm 23C on average, making it the perfect time of year for long days at the beach.
