Where is Amber Heard now? 2023 has seemingly been a quiet year for the actor, but a Netflix true crime documentary is about to revisit arguably the most tumultuous time in her life.
Depp v. Heard, a three-part docuseries that hit the streaming platform on Wednesday, August 16, examines the abuse allegations Heard made against her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, and vice versa. Moreover, it analyzes what caused the trial between these exes to become an all-out media frenzy.
Though the pair split in 2016, Heard wrote a 2018 op-ed in The Washington Post claiming she was a “public figure representing domestic abuse,” but did not mention Depp by name. After its release, Depp sued for $50 million. In 2021, she countersued for $100 million. Ultimately, the jury sided with Depp in June 2022, who won all three counts of defamation over the editorial. He was awarded $15 million in damages, later reduced to $10.35 million, and Heard was rewarded $2 million. She won one of her three defamation counterclaims.
What happened after the exes reconnected in what The New York Times called a "fierce battleground"? Here's what we know.
Where is Amber Heard now? 2023 update
Currently, Amber Heard lives in Madrid, Spain, with her 2-year-old daughter, Oonagh Paige. She's starring in a new film, In the Fire, has reinstated her Instagram account, and plans to trudge on, but that's not to say there weren't a few hurdles leading up to this point.
In an interview with Savannah Guthrie following the explosive trial in 2022, Heard said she understood why the jury sided with her ex-husband. "I don't blame them, I actually understand. He's a beloved character and people feel they know him. He's a fantastic actor." Depp, meanwhile, claimed he'd gotten his life back and began performing onstage with Jeff Beck, who has since passed.
In July 2022, Heard appealed the verdict, and Depp did so months later toward the end of 2022. Then, various organizations came to Heard's defense, per People, and signed an open letter.
"In our opinion, the Depp v. Heard verdict and continued discourse around it indicates a fundamental misunderstanding of intimate partner and sexual violence and how survivors respond to it," part of the statement read. "The damaging consequences of the spread of this misinformation are incalculable."
Is Amber Heard still acting?
Amber Heard is still acting and just released a new film, In the Fire. Between motherhood and getting back into the swing of things in Hollywood, she is seemingly attempting to put the past behind her.
"I'm in control of most of what comes out of my mouth," she told Deadline. "What I don't control is how my pride in this project and everything we've put into this movie can be surrounded by clips of other things."
Will Amber Heard be in 'Aquaman 2'?
Yes, Amber Heard will reprise her role as Mera, the love interest of Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry, in the Aquaman sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is set to be released in late 2023.
According to IMBD, the actor does not have any additional projects taking place after Aquaman's release.
