Where forgotten UK Eurovision acts are now - stage intruder, soap star and co-star couple

The Eurovision Song Contest final is fast approaching - with Mae Muller hoping to claim the 2023 champion title for the UK.

The so-called 'big five' - the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain - each had a free pass into Saturday night's showdown because of their financial contributions to the BBC extravaganza.

The 25-year-old British singer - who is set to perform a rendition of her track I Wrote A Song - will follow in the footsteps of dozens of solo artists and bands who have proudly represented the nation in one of the biggest worldwide shows.

Some of the stars have gone on to successful careers within the world of showbiz while others have faded away from the limelight.

Here's a look at some of the UK acts you may have forgotten about and where they are now.

SueRie, 2018

Singer SueRie's performance might be particularly memorable for some Eurovision fans thanks to the stage invader that grabbed the mic in the middle of her performance.

The intruder, identified later as 'Dr ACactivism', shouted about "Nazis" and "freedom" whilst the track continued to play out to the world.

SuRie, whose real name is Susanna Marie Cork, turned down the offer from Eurovision organisers, the European Broadcasting Union, to sing again because she was "extremely proud" of her performance.

Despite a last-minute wave of sympathy for SuRie, the UK came joint third from last.

The now 34-year-old singer is still producing music, with a new album Building A Woman about to be released, with a UK tour to follow.

Engelbert Humperdinck, 2012

Englebert sold millions of records across the globe back in the 1960s and '70s after achieving international prominence in 1967 with his recording of 'Release Me'.

But his 'Love Will Set You Free' Eurovision entry in 2012 failed to impress, with him placing just second last with 12 points.

However, this didn't stop him as the 87-year-old pop singer still continues to perform across cities in the UK and Europe.

And in 2021, he was appointed MBE in the Birthday Honours for services to music.

His music has also recently made a comeback in TV and film, with 'A Man Without Love', originally released in 1968, featuring in the Marvel Studios series Moon Knight.

"I’ve been having a bit of good luck," Englebert told the Express.

"After 54 years it went back into the charts at number one on the Spotify charts. When success comes along after a long silence, it is so thrilling.

"It’s finding that needle again in that haystack and it starts that ball rolling."

He has also reached new audiences with his hit Quando Quando Quando in the Netflix series Umbrella Academy and 'I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles' in the recent thriller film Bullet Train, which stars Hollywood actor Brad Pitt.

Andy Abraham, 2008

Andy was chosen to represent the UK in 2008 after losing out on The X Factor to singer Shayne Ward.

Despite his success on the singing competition, when it came to Eurovision, it was a sad outcome, having placed joint last.

This didn't dampen his spirits though, as he remained on stage, touring the show 'An Evening with Andy Abraham' for two years after the contest.

More recently, he had starring roles in a touring revival of the musical Godspell.

Scooch, 2007

Scooch divided audiences with their catchy performance of 'Flying the Flag (For You)' in 2007.

The group - made up of singers Natalie Powers, David Ducasse, Caroline Barnes, and Russ Spencer - were one of the first in a long time to see success on the show.

The act was the first in five years to receive “douze points”, winning the maximum score from Malta, while they also went on to reach number five in the UK singles chart with the hit song.

Caroline and Russ even sparked up a romance following their time in the limelight.

Chatting about their lasting love, Caroline told OK!: "We both had other partners during Eurovision, but I think we eventually just came to the realisation we were in love with each other. A year later we were a couple."

The pair, both 44, live in Bournemouth together and starred on Channel 4's Coach Trip in 2010.

They now work in a theatre school in Dorset, while ex-bandmates Natalie and David are also singing coaches at performing arts schools.

Javine Hylton, 2005

Javine rose to stardom after appearing on Popstars: The Rivals - where she narrowly missed out on a place in pop group Girls Aloud in 2002.

After deciding to embark on a solo career, Javine released her debut single, Real Things, in 2003. The song reached Number 4 in the UK charts and is her biggest hit to date.

She then entered the Eurovision Contest three years later for the UK, but failed to impress the rest of Europe.

Her song 'Touch My Fire' sadly came in 22nd place out of 24, with just 18 points.

It didn't stop her from pursuing a music career though as she then when on to become an R&B singer and television personality, making appearances on Celebrity Come Dine With Me, Skins, The Games, Celebrity Masterchef and Never Mind The Buzzcocks.

The 41-year-old mum-of-three has since stepped away from the limelight and set up her own sports and fitness brand.

Samantha Womack, 1991

While Samantha Womack is best known for her role as Ronnie Mitchell on EastEnders, she actually represented the country at Eurovision when she was just 18.

The 50-year-old actress performed her song A Message For Your Heart, finishing in joint 10th place with 47 points.

This week she revealed to This Morning hosts Ed Balls and Susanna Reid that when she failed to win, she was "devastated" because she thought it meant the end of her career.

But after appearing on the show, Samantha's song went on to reach number 30 in the UK Charts.

Sam joined EastEnders in 2007 and became a mum of three children - son Benjamin, 21, daughter Lili-Rose, 18, and stepson Michael from her marriage to Mark Womack.

Last summer she revealed her health battles and announced she was cancer-free in December.

The star is returning to work in July, in a stage production of 42nd Street the Musical.
