"When we played in America with bands we influenced, their fans were like, ‘Who are you?'" They've inspired generations of huge bands, toured with Slipknot and helped put Swedish metal on the map. This is the story of In Flames

In Flames in 2014.

For many years, In Flames were your favourite band's favourite band. Co-pioneers of the 'Gothenburg sound', the very particular strain of melodic death metal that came from that Swedish city, they've influenced everyone from Killswitch Engage to Bring Me The Horizon - but it took years of hard graft to fully get the international status and credit they deserved. In 2014, ahead of their eleventh studio album Siren Charms, Metal Hammer sat down with frontman Anders Fridén for a look back over their journey.

Despite reports to the contrary, the 90s were an awesome climate for metal. Pantera, Machine Head, Sepultura, Korn, Emperor, Cannibal Corpse…the list of names to have created genre-defining efforts in that period is as impressive as in any other era you’d care to name. And then there was the noise coming out of Gothenburg.
