When Premier League and Championship matches resume after World Cup

This weekend marks the final round of fixtures in the Premier League and Championship before the season pauses for the World Cup.

With the Qatar tournament taking place in winter, the decision was taken to halt domestic football in the top two divisions, with leagues one and two continuing.

There are eight fixtures in the top flight today and two more on Sunday, while the second tier sees 10 games today and one tomorrow.

The World Cup starts a week tomorrow (Sunday, November 20) when hosts Qatar face Ecuador.

So when do Premier League and Championship matches resume?

Well, it's the Championship that comes back first.

The Championship returns on Saturday, December 10 following the culmination of the World Cup group stages. Cardiff City face Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium, while Swansea City host Norwich City at the Swansea.com Stadium on the same day.

The Premier League starts later. With the World Cup final taking place on Sunday, December 18, the top flight will get back under way on Boxing Day, when the following fixtures take place.

Brentford v Spurs

Crystal Palace v Fulham

Everton v Wolves

Leicester v Newcastle

Southampton v Brighton

Aston Villa v Liverpool

Arsenal v West Ham.

Chelsea will host Bournemouth and Manchester United face Nottingham Forest on December 27, while Leeds United line up against Manchester City on December 28.
