Wimbledon is almost upon us once more, and that means that it is time for tennis’ top stars to find out who they will be facing in round one.
The draw at the All England Club is always a spectacle, with fans, players and coaches alike watching with great intrigue to find out who they - or their favourite players - will take on in their opening match.
Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek arrive in south west London as the reigning champions, with the Italian having defeated Carlos Alcaraz in a stunning four-set display on Centre Court to earn a maiden grass-court title.
Swiatek did exactly the same on the final Saturday, sweeping Amanda Anisimova aside on the American’s Grand Slam final debut. The Pole was ruthless, emerging a 6-0 6-0 victor.
Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu head up the home hopes, but it will be just Raducanu and Cameron Norrie who are granted those coveted seedings, which mean that players in the world’s top 32 across both the men’s and women’s games will not have to face each other until the third round at the earliest.
Draper began his preparation for his home major late, coming off the back of yet another injury setback in Barcelona back in April. That kept him out of the French Open and Queen’s Club, but he has made a winning start under new coach Sir Andy Murray, himself a two-time Wimbledon champion, down at the Eastbourne Open.
Raducanu reached the final of Queen’s a fortnight ago, and snuck into the world’s top 32 to secure a seeding, while Norrie played just his first match since withdrawing from Roland-Garros when he was beaten by Sinner at the Hurlingham Classic earlier this week.
Also in the draw will be Serena Williams, who was handed a wildcard entry into the women’s draw after a stunning retirement U-turn.
The 41-year-old has won seven titles on the Wimbledon turf, and returned to action at Queen’s Club after almost four years out of the game.
She partnered rising star Victoria Mboko in the doubles, winning their opening match, but they were forced to end their campaign early after the Canadian tore her MCL.
She joined forces with Karolina Muchova at Berlin this week, but they were defeated in their first round.
