When is the Baftas 2022, where are they held, who is hosting and how to watch

It's nearly time for the UK's biggest film awards ceremony of the year as cinema's hottest stars come together.

The British Academy Film Awards will be taking place on Sunday, March 13, with actress Rebel Wilson returning as host for the ceremony this year. Wilson is best known for her roles in Bridesmaids, Pitch Perfect, and war comedy Jojo Rabbit.

First formed in 1947 with the aim "to recognise those who had contributed outstanding creative work towards the advancement of British film," according to the Bafta website.

It is also an independent arts charity that helps to support and bring attention to the talent here in the UK and internationally.

For many years the ceremony was held in either April or May but it was all change in 2002 when the Bafta's were moved to February to precede the Oscars.

Read on to find out everything you need to know about this year's Baftas.

Who is hosting the Baftas?

Australian actress Rebel Wilson is taking on hosting duties at the Bafta award ceremony.

She follows in the footsteps of Graham Norton, Joanna Lumley and Stephen Fry as host.

The 42-year-old will be bringing her humour to the event, which she said will celebrate the anniversaries of popular British film franchises including James Bond and Harry Potter, and the not so highly rated Cats.

Speaking ahead of her Bafta debut on The One Show, she said: “It’s like everybody who could potentially employ me is in the audience so no pressure.

“But it’s really cool that award shows are back it’s like ‘Wow the actors don’t need to do wellness podcasts anymore’.

“They can wear their fancy outfits, they can come on the red carpet, it’s going to be really like glamorous. And I think people are up for that, they’re up for a good night and it’s all about celebrating films.

“I mean, the British films, their legacy, is awesome. We’re celebrating 75 years of James Bond, the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the third anniversary of Cats… so it’s going to be really good.”

It has also been announced that Lady Gaga will introduce the rising star segment at this year’s awards.

Where will the Baftas be held?

Since 2017, the Baftas has been hosted at the same venue and this year is no different. The awards will all be announced at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The historical Victorian venue is also known for hosting The Proms, an eight-week-long event that celebrates classical music concerts and other similar events.

Who is performing?

Dame Shirley Bassey and actress Emilia Jones will both perform during the Bafta awards ceremony.

Dame Shirley, 85, will open this year’s event, while Jones – who is nominated for her performance in Coda – will perform during the show.

Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the James Bond franchise, Dame Shirley will deliver a rendition of a 007 theme to be revealed on the night.

She has recorded the theme for multiple Bond films – including Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever and Moonraker.

Jones, the daughter of Welsh classical singer Aled Jones, will perform a rendition of folk star Joni Mitchell’s ballad Both Sides Now, a song taken from her performance in the film Coda.

Which films have the most nominations?

Sci-fi epic Dune, The Power Of The Dog and Belfast lead the nominations for this year’s Baftas.

Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve and based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, featured a star-studded ensemble cast including Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar Isaac, and received the most nominations overall with 11, including original score, casting, cinematography and best film.

New Zealand director Jane Campion’s dark western, The Power Of The Dog, received eight nominations, among them best director for her, best film, and three nominations across the acting categories.

Sir Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical film Belfast, starring Jude Hill, Jamie Dornan and Caitriona Balfe and which focuses on the Troubles in Northern Ireland, has six nominations, among them best film.
