When is the 2022 FA Cup final? Date and kick-off time for Chelsea vs Liverpool

The FA Cup final is one of the biggest and most notorious events on the football calendar and in 2022, the world’s oldest cup competition has flourished yet again in its 141st season.

This significant match usually marks the close of the domestic football campaign in England, though there are two sets of Premier League fixtures set to take place after the final this year. But nonetheless, it remains one of the most anticipated games of the season.

Here is all you need to know about the 2022 FA Cup final, including when it takes place and who's involved this year.

When is the 2022 FA Cup final?

This 2021-22 FA Cup final will kick-off at 4:45pm on Saturday, May 14 at Wembley Stadium.

The 2020-21 version saw Chelsea and Leicester City go head-to-head at Wembley, in which the Foxes shocked the Blues with a 1-0 victory to claim their first ever FA Cup trophy.

With Covid-19 regulations still in place, only 20,000 fans were allowed inside the national stadium to watch the spectacle, yet they witnessed one of the greatest footballing stories after Youri Tielemans’ 63rd minute strike was enough to see Leicester reign victorious for the first time in this competition.

How to watch

The match will be televised live on both BBC One and ITV. The game can also be streamed live on BBC iPlayer and the BBC iPlayer app, as well as the ITV Hub.

Who’s involved?

The 2021-22 FA Cup final will be contested between Chelsea and Liverpool, after the two sides made it through five rounds of fixtures to secure their spot in this fixture. It is also a rematch of the 2021-22 Carabao Cup final back in February, in which the Reds lifted the trophy after an 11-10 penalty shoot-out victory following a 0-0 draw after extra time.

Chelsea entered the competition in the Third Round, and on their way to the final, they overcame Chesterfield (5-1), Plymouth Argyle (2-1), Luton Town (3-2), Middlesbrough (2-0) and Crystal Palace (2-0).

Liverpool also entered the competition in the Third Round, and on their way to the final, they overcame Shrewsbury Town (4-1), Cardiff City (3-1), Norwich City (2-1), Nottingham Forest (1-0) and Manchester City (3-2).

What does it mean for the winner?

The winners of the FA Cup automatically qualify for the group stage of the 2022-23 UEFA Europa League, while they are also guaranteed a place in the 2022 FA Community Shield in August.

Should either of the winning teams already finish in the top five of the Premier League this season, which is pretty much already confirmed, then the Europa League position will be given to the team that finishes sixth in the Premier League.

Should the winner of the FA Cup also win the Premier League, then the loser of the FA Cup final will face the Premier League champions. This means that the 2022 Community Shield could be a repeat of the 2022 FA Cup final.
