In case you missed it, the new Ryan Gosling-piloted sci-fi flick "Project Hail Mary" blasted off to great success at the box office after hitting theaters this weekend. Based on the beloved 2021 Andy Weir novel of the same name, the big-screen adaptation grossed $81 million in North America and another $60 in other territories, with its worldwide total of $141 million making it the biggest global debut of 2026 for a non-franchise movie and Amazon MGM Studios' biggest opening ever, per Deadline.
And, equally important, the movie's really good, too. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the tale of a sixth-grade science teacher who's rocketed off into outer space to save a world slowly dying from loss of solar energy is "the best movie of the year so far," according to TG's Malcolm McMillan. It's notched a stellar 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Given that critical and commercial success, you're no doubt wondering when one of the most anticipated movies of 2026 will be hitting streaming platforms so you can watch Gosling's Ryland Grace save humanity from the comfort of your own sofa. Here's everything we know so far about when "Project Hail Mary" will be landing its ship onto streaming.
When and where 'Project Hail Mary' might start streaming
As of press time, there hasn't been an official announcement made about when exactly "Project Hail Mary" will premiere on streaming. The sci-fi smash was just released in the United States by Amazon MGM Studios mere days ago, on Friday, March 20.
However, we do know that the flick will stream exclusively on Prime Video, given that it's an Amazon MGM Studios property. Their titles typically take 45-75 days to hit premium video-on-demand platforms for purchase or rental, but that really varies depending on how well the film performs at the box office. For example, the flop "Mercy" hit PVOD only 25 days after its theatrical window. But "Crime 101," which opened Feb. 13, doesn't have a digital release date yet and it's been over a month.
For a huge hit like "Project Hail Mary," we expect Amazon to keep it in theaters for as long as there's interest. However, as the summer movie season kicks into gear, new films will crowd it out. So, our guess is that "Project Hail Mary" will arrive on digital PVOD in early May — possibly May 5 or May 12.
After a short window of likely a few weeks, it could hit Prime Video in early June — possibly June 5 or 12.
How to watch 'Project Hail Mary' right now
Right now, the only way to tune into "Project Hail Mary" is by going to your local movie theater. And what a cinematic experience you'll have: The movie itself was filmed for IMAX, a massiveness felt in every frame but balanced by the use of practical effects and immersive set design throughout.
For example, Rocky the alien was "about 50 percent puppet, 50 percent animation," director Christopher Miller revealed to The Hollywood Reporter, and they didn't employ greenscreen, a rarity for a space-set project. ("We built the sets for the [space] ship vertically and horizontally for the two different modes of gravity," Miller explained.)
Whether you watch it from inside an IMAX theater or from your IKEA couch, you're going to have a good time with this one.
