When is Karwa Chauth in 2024? Story, history, significance, importance and all you need to know

One of the most important Hindu festivals wherein married women fast and pray for their husband's long life and health is the Karwa Chauth The festival is celebrated on the fourth day after the full moon in the month of Kartik, as per the Hindu calendar, and it is widely observed by married women in North and West India. On this day, women wake up early in the morning, bathe and dress up, and have Sargi-- which is a pre-dawn meal which is usually sent or made by their mothers-in-law. After sunrise, they then keep a day-long fast and also refrain from having water. Women keep the fast dress up in beautiful festive clothes, usually in red as it symbolises auspiciousness, marriage, and love. They also wear their best jewellery, and bangles, and apply mehendi. In the evening, women get together to perform Karwa Chauth rituals together. When the moon rises in the evening, they pray to the Moon and offer Arghya to it. After this, the husbands help their wives break their fast by offering them water and food.
