When does All Creatures Great and Small return to Channel 5?

Channel 5's adaptation based on James Herriot’s collection of stories, All Creatures Great and Small, has become hugely popular with viewers since it first launched on television screens in 2020. Fans of the series have been eagerly-awaiting its return following the Christmas special in 2021 and now it's been confirmed that there isn't long to wait.

Set and filmed in the Yorkshire Dales, the cast and crew wrapped filming on the third series of the period drama, set in the 1930s, back in July. Nicholas Ralph is reprising his role as young vet James Herriot alongside Rachel Shenton as local farmer Helen Alderson.

They will be joined by Samuel West as Siegfried Farnon, Anna Madeley as Mrs Hall and Callum Woodhouse as Siegfried’s brother Tristan. But when does the third series start and what can you expect? Here are all the details you need:

When does All Creatures Great and Small return?

The period drama All Creatures Great and Small will return with its third series on Thursday, September 15 from 9pm on Channel 5, you'll also be able to stream on My5. The last two series consisted of six hour long episodes and a Christmas special, and this latest instalment will follow the same format.

A synopsis of the third series from Channel 5 says: "Series three begins in spring 1939. Some big changes are happening at Skeldale and everyone has to learn how to adjust.

"James enters into a new stage of his life with Helen and at the practice, where Tristan is now also a qualified vet. After being made joint business partner by Siegfried, James pushes to take on more responsibility via the Ministry of Agriculture’s new bovine TB testing scheme, but its unexpected challenges risk pushing him to breaking point. As a potential Second World War looms, all of our Skeldale family have to consider their purpose in Darrowby and beyond."

The minute-long trailer shared on the Channel 5 Twitter page has also teased scenes of James and Helen's wedding after the pair finally got engaged last season. Earlier this year, it was confirmed that All Creatures Great and Small would return for a series three and four, with both series also including a Christmas special.

If you want to catch up on series one and two of All Creatures Great and Small before the new series, you can stream all the episodes over on My5.
